On the afternoon of March 3, the pope suffered a double severe respiratory crisis and a bronchospasm. Only three days had passed since the last episode. They were caused by the excessive accumulation of mucus in the bronchi.

Doctors managed to clear the airways using a non-invasive ventilation system. This helps the pope breathe without needing intubation.

This was the third health crisis suffered by the pope in the hospital and the second in a few days. Doctors continue to have no predictions. Despite the apparent improvement of the pope in the previous week, the problems of the last few days have put an end to the optimism. The pope is still not out of danger.
