Celebrating the Mass of the Word of God is a tradition Pope Francis instituted in 2019; this year, the Mass coincided with the closing event of the Jubilee of Communication, the first of 2025.

In his homily, the Pope stressed how the Gospel never disappoints. He also gave some advice to those present, among whom were thousands of journalists.

POPE FRANCIS
We need to be more accustomed to reading the Scriptures. I like to recommend that everybody have a small Gospel, a small pocket New Testament, and carry it in their bag, carry it with them all the time, to take it out during the day and read it. One passage, two passages… This way, throughout the day, we are in contact with the Lord. One small Gospel is enough.

Also traditionally on this day, the Pope appoints new Ministers of the Word. This year, he appointed 40 lay people from all over the world who can now officially be lectors, proclaiming the first or second reading at Mass, and faithfully communicating the Word of God.
