Imagine picking up the phone and having a video call with the Pope. This is what happens to the Catholic community in Gaza, every day, at 7pm.

But this call was one of the most special. Hours before, the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was put into effect, and this is how they celebrated it in the parish.

"Almost all the refugees here ate chicken yesterday."

Although it may seem like a normal meal, for them it was a great banquet. It was a reflection that the Pope wanted to share with the pilgrims during the general audience.

POPE FRANCIS
Yesterday, as every day, I called the parish in Gaza. They were happy. There are 600 people there, from the parish and school, and they told me: “Today we ate lentils with chicken”. Something they were not used to eating during these times and also some vegetables.

Pope Francis is following everything that is happening in the area first-hand with these calls. It is an appointment that the Pope has not missed since October 9, 2023, shortly after the bombings in Gaza began.
