The funeral for Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso was an emotional event. He was one of the few active cardinals who died in the Vatican.

The dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, was in charge of giving the homily.

He was only 72 years old. His health problems slowed down, but did not weaken, his commitment to dialogue with other religions in his service as prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, for which he devoted himself until the end, with dedication.

The Pope came at the end of the funeral to say a final farewell to the deceased, who was one of his main collaborators in the dialogue with Islam. In fact, in 2019 Pope Francis named Ayuso a cardinal. And from then on, Cardinal Ayuso could be seen on some of the most important trips made in Muslim-majority countries.
He was seen in Bahrain…

In Morocco…

And in the United Arab Emirates. What is clear is that Cardinal Ayuso was one of the people who, in recent years, worked on the front line to strengthen the Vatican's ties with the Islamic world. In fact, some Muslim leaders were present at the funeral as a sign of respect and friendship.
