Pope Francis has announced in some interviews that he is personally reforming the rite of the funeral for popes.
POPE FRANCIS
One has to prepare. I was with the master of ceremonies preparing the rites for the Pope funeral… We simplified them quite a bit.
The Pope said that popes should be buried with dignity, but not in cotton wool. These modifications have already been published by the Vatican. Therefore, some things will change with respect to how, for example, Benedict XVI funeral was undertaken.
For example, the confirmation of the death of the Pope will not be in his room, but in a chapel. In addition, the body will be placed directly in the coffin, which will be open in St. Peter Basilica so that the faithful can venerate it. The coffin will be simpler and only one will be used, instead of the three that were previously used.
The master of liturgical celebrations, Diego Ravelli, pointed out that, with these modifications, the figure of the pope is intended to be enhanced as a pastor and not as a ruler.
