The Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, Anita Among, traveled to the Vatican to visit Pope Francis and exchange gifts. The Pope gifted her a plaque of the care of creation as well as several of his books.

Anita did not go alone to her visit with the Pope. She was accompanied by a large group of her family members.

Before saying goodbye, Pope Francis said he would like to make a second visit to Uganda.

I remember my visit.
Thank you, I have to go a second time.

The Pope visited Uganda in 2015. There, he thanked them for their reception of refugees.

POPE FRANCIS
Our world, caught up in wars, violence, and various forms of injustice, is witnessing an unprecedented movement of peoples. How we deal with them is a test of our humanity, our respect for human dignity, and above all our solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need.

In Uganda, refugees are given land and provided with basic services. Many come from sub-Saharan Africa. In 2021 alone, Uganda gave asylum to more than one million people from countries like South Sudan.

Francis is the third pope to visit the nation, after Paul VI and John Paul II. More than 80% of the Ugandan population is Christian.
