Tradition holds it snowed on the site of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in the middle of summer in the 4th century.
For this reason, every year on August 5, the feast of Our Lady of the Snows, the miracle is recreated with perfumed white rose petals falling from the roof of the basilica. Pope Francis celebrated Vespers in St. Mary Major.
