From now on, this will be the person accompanying the Pope at public events and private meetings in Vatican. His name is Daniele Cherubini and he is the Pope's new steward.

He was first seen with Pope Francis here, in the popemobile, after Mass on May 26 for World Children's Day.

Since then, Daniele has also made appearances at the Pope's private meetings at the Apostolic Palace. For example, when the president of the Dominican Republic visited the Vatican during his tour of Europe. Likewise, on the day Argentina's new ambassador to the Holy See presented his credentials to the Pope.

Gabriele replaces Sandro Mariotti, who was often seen pushing the Pope in his wheelchair. One of Mariotti's last appearances with Pope Francis was at this audience.

The position of steward is listed in the Pontifical Yearbook as valet. Regardless of its name, what is clear is that the person who performs this task must be someone the Pope trusts.

Now, Daniele will share this position with former manager Piergiorgio Zanetti.
