In the days leading up to the swearing-in ceremony, the 34 new Swiss Guard recruits have a busy schedule.

The morning of the ceremony, the Guards started the day with a special Mass.

Following the Mass, the recruits and their families held a private audience with Pope Francis. And he took this time to reflect on the important service the Guards perform at the Vatican.

POPE FRANCIS
For me, this day is always eagerly anticipated because it gives me an opportunity to publicly express my thanks for the presence and service of the Swiss Guard. You demonstrate a high level of motivation and willingness to serve and this also brings me great joy: such good fellowship among you.

The Pope encouraged the young men to cultivate a strong community life during their two years of service.

POPE FRANCIS
Today, it is widespread among young people to spend free time alone with their computers or cellphones. Therefore, I also say to you young guards, go against the current.

Pope Francis then extended a blessing in Latin to everyone present.

And to finish the audience, the Pope joked about having to greeted each new Swiss Guard and their families in his wheelchair.

I apologize. I have to do it in the royal carriage because my knees do not allow doing it on foot as I would like to do it. But I will do it anyway.

The Guards took a quick group photo with the Pope before preparing for their swearing-in ceremony.
