The lawsuit of the former auditor general who was suing the Vatican for over 10 million dollars has been rejected. And now he must pay restitution. The former auditor and his now-deceased deputy had denounced the Vatican Secretariat of State for wrongful dismissal from their roles in 2017 and had then sued for compensation.
They had been hired just two years prior to review the financial operations of all Vatican departments. But their superiors said they abused their authority by illegally commissioning an external company to investigate the private lives of some Vatican officials. The ex-auditor general denies this.
LIBERO MILONE
Former Vatican Auditor General
I always acted within the framework of the rules dictated by the charter and by the Holy Father, who was my only superior.
What had we gotten close to? That is the question. What had we seen or thought that we had seen that was causing problems there.
Now, the Vatican has ordered Libero Milone to pay over $50,000 in court fees and the estate of his late deputy to pay nearly $70,000.
This is one example of the turmoil the Vatican has experienced in its attempts to revamp its economic and financial systems. Precisely on the day the court released their decision, the Vatican published a more in-depth outline on the roles of the office that Milone once ran.
