The Secretary-General strongly condemned the attack on a memorial ceremony in Kerman city in the Islamic Republic of Iran, which reportedly killed more than 100 people and injured many more.
Pope Francis echoed the chorus of voices condemning the attack. He sent a telegram to the victims' families, expressing his "deep sadness" for the loss of life and offering his prayers for peace for the Iranian people.
Relations between the Vatican and the Republic of Iran have grown throughout 2023. In November, the Pope received a call from the President, who asked for his mediation for a cease-fire in Gaza. A few days before the end of the year, Pope Francis met with Iran's new ambassador to the Holy See, who expressed his solidarity with him through a gift.
This is also a reminder that the Iranian people are familiar with Christian culture and faith.
2024 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Vatican and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
