This is one of the few images of Peter Hans Kolvenbach, who died on Saturday, November 26, two days before his 88th birthday. The passionate Dutchman from Lebanon was the former Superior General of the Society of Jesus for 24 years and passed away in Beirut.
John Paul II truly appreciated him and asked him to personally deliver spiritual exercises to him.
Kolvenbach was the first Superior General of the Jesuits who decided to resign, a decision he made in 2008 for reasons of health and age.
Thus, Pope Francis has sent his condolences in a telegram to the current Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Arturo Sosa, to tell him that he will be 'spiritually present at the funeral.'
The pope recalls Fr. Kolvenbach's 'integral fidelity to Christ and His Gospel,â? which was joined to 'a generous commitment in exercising his office with a spirit of service for the good of the Church.â?
