Just a few weeks ago, on the Sunday of the Divine Mercy, the Pope recalled the war in the Ukraine.

POPE FRANCIS
'I am thinking of the ordeal of those who suffer the consequences of the violence in Ukraine: of those who continue to live in lands that are turned upside-down by hostilities that have caused thousands of deaths, and of those â?? over a million â?? who have been forced to leave due to the grave situation that persists.â?

This coming Sunday, April 24, Pope Francis wants to dedicate a special collection in order to alleviate the harsh situations of the civilians in Ukraine, who always seem to pay the highest price in wars.

On Wednesday, during the general audience, he once again, asked for the generosity of Catholics in Europe.

POPE FRANCIS
'I want to thank, in advance, all of those who will contribute generously to this initiative that will take place next Sunday, April 24.â?

Two years of war have left a bleak reality in Ukraine. Thousands of people have lost their homes because of the bombings and now live like this, some have
resorting to sharing old train cars.

The World Food Programme of the UN estimates that there is a high chance that some 300,000 Ukrainians will soon begin to starve.

The armed conflict began in April 2014 supported by Moscow and the pro-Russian government in Kiev. Since then, more than 10,000 people have lost their lives, there are about 2 million refugees and internally displaced and another 3 million people need humanitarian assistance.

As Pope Francis has recalled, the war in the Ukraine, along with others around the world are a part of a piecemeal Third World War. It is just one more to add to the list of the forgotten wars in the world.
