It is common knowledge that the Pope has a special relationship with all the employees of Casa Santa Marta.

On Saturday, at the end of audience of the Jubilee, the Pope asked the thousands of pilgrims gathered to pray for Elvira, one of the cooks, who recently passed away.

POPE FRANCIS
'I would like to tell you that today I'm somewhat sad, because yesterday a lady who has helped us very much, for years, died. Her husband also works here, with us, in Casa Santa Marta. After a long illness, the Lord called her to himself. Her name is Elvira. I invite you today to perform two works of mercy: to pray for the dead and to comfort the afflicted. And I invite you to pray a Hail Mary for the eternal peace and eternal joy of Elvira, and that the Lord console her husband and her children.

It is customary for the the Pope to interrupt his speeches, during these audience meetings, and speak about everyday life in the Vatican.

In the past, he has received his condolences for the death of relatives, or has shared his level of closeness with his staff.
