Pope Francis held an audience with about 700 people from Germany's Bavaria region and Italy's Trento province. The Vatican Christmas tree and Nativity scene in St. Peter's Square came from those areas.

He began by thanking them for their donation and complimenting the tree and Nativity. He then joked that the children who helped decorate the tree already had advanced their art careers with work displayed in St. Peter's Square.

'Michelangelo began this way!

He then discussed the reason for the season: Christ's birth. He said that God never imposes himself on us with force. Rather, he simply lived by example: with humility and simplicity.

POPE FRANCIS
'He makes Himself small, He becomes a child, to attract us with love, to touch our hearts with His humble goodness, to draw attention through His poverty to those who worry about accumulating the false treasures of this world.

After his brief remarks, Pope Francis took time to greet and bless several small children. He even stopped to have a quick conversation with some of them.
