The Vatican's spokesperson, Fr. Federico Lombardi clarified the Pope's comments on the Paris attacks, adding that the Pope does not condone violence. On the papal plane, he told journalists that killing in the name of God is an aberration, but faith, should not be mocked.

POPE FRANCIS
'It's true that one cannot react violently, but if Dr. Gasbarri, who is a good friend of mine, insulted my mother, he should expect a punch.

Through a statement, Lombardi said that the Pope's off the cuff remarks referenced the spontaneous reaction one can have when feeling deeply offended. A reaction that comes when one, feels violated.

It was an example, said Lombardi, to illustrate that faith is something that's deeply felt.

He then added that the Church is not indifferent to faith being mocked. But obviously,  there must be a balance and tolerance, he added, when it comes to respecting rights.

The Pope on many occasions has condemned the attacks against the French magazine, adding that God should never be used as an excuse to kill.
