The former president and former treasurer of the Holy See's pediatric hospital, Giuseppe Profiti and Massimo Spina, have attended the initial court appearance for the case against them in the Vatican.

They are accused of using 422,000 euros from the hospital foundation to restructure Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone's attic, and additionally, benefit a Roman constructor.

For the time being, the cardinal is not included on the list of witnesses. However, he is one of the protagonists of the story. In fact, during the court appearance, the existence of a letter written by the cardinal was mentioned that could exculpate one or both defendants.

When the case was discovered in 2015, Card. Bertone said he was not aware of the operation. However, he decided to pay 150,000 euros to the hospital as compensation for any damage caused.

As August, a month of vacation, soon begins in Italy, the following hearings will be held September 7 to 9, during the pope's trip to Colombia.
