The Vatican has shut off all 100 fountains in St. Peter's Square and surrounding areas due to the extreme drought in Rome.

It is the driest spring and summer in 60 years and Italy is on the verge of reaching natural disaster status.

To help fight this, the city has asked to ration water throughout the day, as the Rome is tapping into nearby lakes for additional water.

Pope Francis has agreed to do his part at the Vatican. This action coincides with his view on care for the environment, explicitly stated in his encyclical, ‘Laudato si'.
