Portuguese Cardinal Manuel Monteiro de Castro turns 80, leaving 116 cardinal electors to vote in a possible conclave.
Benedict XVI named him cardinal in 2012 and he is the Major Penitentiary Emeritus of the Apostolic Penitentiary since he retired. This department deals with the grave sins only the pope is able to forgive, especially focusing on internal forum and indulgences.
The cardinal has served as the pro-apostolic nuncio in the West Indies to countries like Belize, Jamaica and St. Lucia. He also was the Apostolic Nuncio to eight other countries, including El Salvador, Honduras, South Africa and Spain.
He participated in the conclave that elected Pope Francis in 2013.
