With this telegram sent Wednesday morning, Pope Francis sends his condolences to the Bush family after the death of the 41st president of the United States, George. H.W. Bush.
The telegram states that Pope Francis “offers heartfelt condolences and the assurance of his prayers to all the Bush family.” He also commends “Bush's soul to the merciful love of Almighty God.”
Bush died on November 30, 2018 at age 94 in his Houston, Texas, home. He was surrounded by his family and friends.
In U.S. history, he was the second person to watch his son be elected president after him when George W. Bush took office in 2000.
Current U.S. President Donald Trump named Dec. 5 the national day of mourning for the former president.
