During the Angelus, the pope reflected on joy and doubt, two characteristics of Advent, the period of Christmas preparation.

POPE FRANCIS
The Word of God invites us to be joyful, but to be aware that existence also includes moments of doubt, in which we may struggle to believe. Joy and doubt are both experiences that are part of our lives.

The pope explained that Christmas is a call to interior change. This can create doubt because it requires facing one's own sin. Nevertheless, when evil is defeated, joy comes. Pope Francis said Christmas carries a concrete message.

POPE FRANCIS
It is necessary to purify our faith every day. It is a matter of preparing ourselves to welcome not a fairy-tale character, but the God who challenges us, involves us and before whom a choice is imposed.

Pope Francis continued an ancient Roman tradition. After the Angelus, he blessed thousands of Baby Jesus figures the children brought.

The children will take good care of them this week. On Christmas Eve, they will place them in the manger.
