In his homily at Casa Santa Marta, the pope recalled that the devil hides among grudges, and he increases them in order to destroy us. He said they are often started from minor issues, but they have huge consequences. Therefore, he advised Christians to be generous and to forgive as soon as possible.

POPE FRANCIS
God forgets the terrible stories of so many sinners, of our sins. He forgive us and keeps going. He asks only this, 'Do the same: learn to forgive, do not carry this cross of hatred, rancor, of 'you are going to pay for this.'” These words are neither Christian nor human.

That's why before confession, the pope advised Christians to ask themselves if they forgive others. He said asking for forgiveness also means forgiving.
