The new Swiss Guard recruits finally met with Pope Francis.

These young men were supposed to meet with the pope in May, when the swearing in of the new soldiers is traditionally celebrated. Nevertheless, the pandemic caused the ceremony to be postponed until October.

Pope Francis asked these young men to always preserve their principles.

POPE FRANCIS
“In today's social context, many young people run the risk of being stripped of their souls, when they follow ideals and lifestyles that respond only to material desires or needs.”

That's why he recommended that they take advantage of their time in Rome. He thanked the guards for the service they offer the popes.

POPE FRANCIS
“I thank you, not only for what you do—which is a lot—but for how you do it.”

Pope Francis asked them to swear fidelity, not only to the pontificate, but above all, to their Christian vocation.
