Margaret Karram is the new president of the Focolare Movement. She succeeds Maria Voce, becoming the second successor to lead the movement founded by Chiara Lubich in 1943.

“I was very moved when they announced my name. At the same time, I felt the strength of the Spirit inside me, the Spirit I had been invoking all day.”
Her predecessor, Maria Voce, served two terms as president of the movement, the maximum time allowed by its statutes, which establish also that the president must be a woman. The Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life approved her election.
Margaret is a 58-year-old Arab. She was born in Israel and has worked on various commissions that promote interreligious dialogue.

The movement's general assembly was held online. Three hundred fifty-nine representatives from all over the world participated. The Focolare Movement holds a presence in 182 countries and has around two million followers. Their charisma is focused on promoting universal fraternity and unity.
