Card. Charles Maung Bo condemned the coup in Myanmar on Monday, in which the army overthrew elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, disrupting a peaceful transfer of power.
The cardinal called the events “the result of a sad lack of dialogue and communication,” a very different situation from that of 2015, when “a peaceful transition to the elected government was effected by the army.”
He urged the military to keep its promise of democracy, saying that “Myanmar people are tired of empty promises.”
He asked the international community to avoid sanctions, saying these “risk collapsing the economy” and “throwing millions into poverty.”
He also expressed support for Aung San Suu Kyi, so she may “once again walk amidst [her] people, raising their spirits.”
