For years, people have wondered whether Pope Francis is more of a theologian or a pastor. The new book, “Francis: Pastor and Theologian” sets out to explain why he's both.

CARD. JUAN JOSÉ OMELLA
Archbishop of Barcelona

“It's not speculative theology. Rather, it's a theology based on life, on what we as people live. And it helps to better understand what we experience on a daily basis, in marriage, at work, in our free time. It helps us discover God's presence, which gives us a new perspective on humanity and brings us to fight for justice, truth and peace.”

Card. Juan José Omella presented the book in Rome. It's a compilation of presentations on Pope Francis' leadership style, given by experts at the Ateneu Universitari Sant Pacià in Barcelona.

CARD. JUAN JOSÉ OMELLA

Archbishop of Barcelona

“He speaks from experience, from what he's learned, from the Gospel. From theology, from his own experiences, but firmly grounded in the Gospel. And as a pastor, I find that image of him as a pastor and theologian helpful. It shows me the way.”

ARMAND PUIG

Rector, Ateneu Universitari Sant Pacià

“The pastor is one who seeks to give life, and to give it abundantly. And this Pope, everyone understands him when he speaks. And some of the things the Pope says seem obvious, but that's because the most important things are the essential. If you explain the essential, you are hitting the nail on the head.”

The book addresses topics important to Pope Francis, like synodality, poverty, discernment and interreligious dialogue.

It's an opportunity to understand the present and get an idea of the future of the Church and the world.
