Argentine doctor and journalist, Nelson Castro, has researched the health of the popes from the 20th century, starting with Leo XIII. And he's uncovered all sorts of anecdotes, like that of one of Pius XII's former doctors, who would sell photographs of the sick pontiff to the press.

Castro shares these stories in his book, “The Health of the Popes.” In it he addresses controversial topics, like the death of Pope John Paul I.

Nelson Castro had access to countless sources, both official and unofficial. He also spoke to experts like Stefania Falasca, the vice president of the John Paul I Vatican Foundation.

“She had access to the official certificates, which contained errors. They were missing the pathology and toxicology reports, which are necessary if we want to know the real cause of John Paul I's death. I think it was a natural death.”

Nelson Castro wrote this book at Pope Francis' suggestion. He recently met with the Pope and says he's in tip-top shape. In fact, the Pope continues to plan international trips without any health restrictions.

“He told us that after his surgery, he feels very well, no doubt about it. He follows all of his doctor's advice and is happy. He's living a completely normal life.”

The journalist also talked about the sciatica that prevented the Pope from presiding at a number of official ceremonies during his pontificate.

“He told us the situation is better because he's getting treatment from a specialist. And this helps him walk better.”

The Pope will turn 85 in December, and he shows no signs of slowing down.
