Pope Francis expressed his sorrow for the victims of the massacre in Nigeria on Pentecost Sunday.

During the celebration in a Church in Ondo, men armed with rifles opened fire on the faithful, leaving at least 50 dead, including many children.

The mass shooting was in the Catholic Church of St. Francis Xavier of Owo, located in an area that, until now, had been considered one of the most peaceful in the region.

In a virtual meeting organized by Aid to the Church in Need, just days before the attack, Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso of Kaduna stressed the danger of the growing strength of terrorist groups in the country.

In the last four years or so, it has taken a new dimension, because they've acquired weapons, and therefore, they have the ability to destroy massively, and therefore, destroy villages, dispossessing them of the properties, you know, killing people, making so many people refugees

The country's president has condemned the act, but the identity of the assailants is still unknown.
