On the eve of the 60th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, the Pope recalled that even at that time the threat of nuclear war was more real than ever.

Those were the years of the Cold War and precisely in October 1962, the tension between Russia and the United States soared because of the Cuban missile crisis.

POPE FRANCIS
We cannot forget the danger of nuclear war that threatened the world at that time. Why not learn from history? Even at that time, there were conflicts and great tension, but the peaceful way was chosen.

Pope Francis spoke these words at the end of the canonization of the Salesian lay religious Artemide Zatti and the founder of the Scalabrinians, Giovanni Battista Scalabrini.

Both lived between the 19th and 20th centuries, during a time of crisis, when Europeans were emigrating due to hunger and war. Pope Francis criticized the treatment of many migrants arriving in Europe.

POPE FRANCIS
The exclusion of migrants is scandalous! In fact, the exclusion of migrants is criminal; they die in front of us.
The exclusion of migrants is disgusting; it is sinful; it is criminal.

During his pontificate, Pope Francis has canonized 911 people. 813 of them are from Otranto, a town in southern Italy where they were martyred by the Turks at the end of the 15th century.
