Pope Francis died of a stroke, which led to a coma and caused cardiovascular collapse.

These are the causes of death issued by the Vatican's chief physician, after the deceased Pope underwent an electrocardiogram.

The death certificate was released by the Holy See. In it, Dr. Arcangeli determined that the Pope had other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

This was compounded by acute respiratory failure due to multimicrobial pneumonia, the reason for which Pope Fancis was treated at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome in mid-February.

Determining the Pope's death is the first step in the rite of confirmation, which took place on April 21 at 8:00pm. It lasted just under an hour and was presided over by Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrell.

This solemn ceremony, as protocol dictates, also includes the doctor and the Pope's family or closest associates. The official death certificate must be issued, and then the body is placed in the coffin.

It is then time for the Pope's body to be held privately before being transferred to the Basilica so that the faithful can say their farewells.

In this case, and at the Pope's explicit request, this first phase is not taking place in the Apostolic Palace, as was the case with his predecessors, but in Casa Santa Marta, the place where he lived for 12 years.
