While many had hoped to see him, no one expected to see the pope again this soon at St. Peters'.
The entire square erupted in loud applause at what was Pope Francis' first public appearance since leaving the hospital two weeks prior.
He did so at the end of the mass celebrated for the Jubilee of the Sick - a mass he was supposed to have presided over, but current circumstances prevented him from doing so.
Pope Francis continued relying on oxygen support and appeared visibly weaker.
"Happy Sunday to all."
After some minor technical issues, he repeated his words…
"Happy Sunday to all. Thank you very much."
After finishing his brief remarks, he greeted some of those present. Throughout his short appearance, his speaking difficulties were evident, although the pope expressed once again his strong desire to be close to the faithful. Later, the Vatican reported that Francis passed through the Holy Door, prayed, and went to confession.
