The Pope was asked a question in a letter before going to the hospital. A woman asked him if he could forgive what she called "unforgivable": her husband's infidelity.
The Pope responded as follows: he acknowledged that the issue is not easy to resolve. However, he recommended that she should be honest with herself. In other words, if she loves him, she must find a way to forgive.
If there is love… love is capable of sowing patience, of mending, of repairing.
The Pope emphasizes that forgiveness must be a "gratuitous" act and suggests that, in order to forgive, she ask her husband to join her on a journey of spiritual accompaniment with another Christian couple to help them manage this situation.
Finally, Pope Francis also asks her to pray and specifically advises her to look to the Holy Family of Nazareth, to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
