Three years ago, the European Union activated what is known as the Temporary Protection Directive for the reception of Ukrainian nationals.
This is a mechanism that allows displaced people to reside, work, study or receive health care in any country of the European community.
However, this protection regime is temporary. ending in March 2026, one year from now.
This is why Caritas Europa, along with more than 130 other organizations, is calling for its extension. A long-term solution is sought to ensure more durable stays.
What they claim is that Ukraine is still not safe and that airstrikes and shelling continue to be reported on a daily basis.
Also, they point out that even if a ceasefire is achieved in the future, the cities are destroyed, so it is not a safe space for a definitive return.
For the moment, more than 4.5 million people have benefited from this temporary protected status.
