The Ortega regime has expelled more than 30 Poor Clare nuns from their convents. It was the Nicaraguan lawyer in exile, Martha Patricia, who shared the information on her social networks.
The attorney has indicated that the sisters were notified that they had to leave their residence. In addition, she has detailed that their current whereabouts are unknown, and it is unknown if they had to leave the country.
The Poor Clares acquired legal status in the country in 2004, but their legal status was cancelled in 2023.
The Ortega dictatorship has done the same in recent years with dozens of other organizations, including, for example, Caritas of Matagalpa.
Also a few days ago, the Discalced Carmelite Friars withdrew from the country. In a statement, they linked the announcement to the lack of vocations. However, Martha Patricia maintains that this is not the reason, but rather, an obligation on the part of the Sandinista dictatorship.
In 2022, the nuns of Mother Teresa of Calcutta had to flee Nicaragua, crossing the border into Costa Rica, after the order was dissolved and all its charitable works closed.
