All the major superiors of the Society of Jesus will meet in Rome in 2025. It is the third time in history that such a meeting has been held. The last ones were in 2005 and in 2000.
It was Father Sosa who called them together through a letter. The meeting will be held from October 17 to 26. The objective is to reflect and discern on the current moment in which the Jesuits find themselves.
Among the topics to be discussed will be the meaning and challenge of the vow of poverty, the role of women, and also abuse. Sosa points out in the letter that it has been especially difficult to recognize that many of the abuses occurred within their communities.
The most notorious case was that of Rupnik, the theologian and artist accused of abusing dozens of women. The Society initially established precautionary measures. For example, he was prohibited from publicly exercising his priestly ministry, and he could not leave the boundaries of Rome or carry out artistic works in public.
Finally, the Jesuits ended up expelling him on June 15, 2023, which was a decision that Rupnik did not even appeal.
