The Pope confided to the Pontifical Swiss Guard Foundation that he is pleased that there are more and more married soldiers.
The regulations of the military corps state that new recruits must not be married when they start their service. To get married they must be at least 25 years old, have worked as a guard for at least 5 years and commit to work for another three.
POPE FRANCIS
I like the fact that the guards get married; I like the fact they have children, they have a family.
This aspect has become a lot more relevant, inasmuch as the number of married guards with children has increased, and the wellbeing of the families is of fundamental importance for the Church and society.
The Pontifical Swiss Guard Foundation is a key organ for the small papal army because it is in charge of promoting and financing many of its projects such as the future restructuring of its barracks.
