The US government awards the Pope the nation's highest civilian decoration: the Medal of Freedom with Distinction. This is the first time Joe Biden has conferred this honor in his four years in office.
It was Biden who informed Pope Francis by telephone on 11 January, just after canceling his trip to Italy and the Vatican because of the fires in Los Angeles.
According to the White House statement, the medal is for individuals who have made, for example, exemplary contributions to American prosperity or values, or efforts for peace.
In fact, the government highlights Bergoglio's dedication to the vulnerable in Argentina. As Pope, he has continued to serve the poor, as well as his ability to fight for peace, protect the planet and reach out to different religions.
