The judge presiding over one of the criminal proceedings against former Cardinal McCarrick, accused of sexual assault, has ordered the trial to be suspended for life, until the American dies.

This is because, under Wisconsin law, the case cannot be dismissed. The court halted this process in January 2024, when it was determined that McCarrick, 94, had dementia and was therefore incompetent to defend himself.

The same was done by the court in the other trial McCarrick faced in Massachusetts, also for sexual abuse of a minor. In this trial, the case was dismissed.

These are the only two trials the former cardinal has faced. Despite having dozens of accusations against him in the United States, many of those alleged crimes have expired over time.

McCarrick was one of the most influential men in the American Catholic Church, becoming the Archbishop of Washington. The Vatican expelled him from the priesthood in 2019 after a lengthy investigation.
