Pope Francis has appointed Sister Simona Brambilla as the new prefect of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, a position of high responsibility in the Roman Curia. This appointment represents a significant step forward in the inclusion of women in leadership roles within the Vatican.
Brambilla, who has been superior general of the Consolata Missionaries in Italy and secretary of the same dicastery since October 2023, becomes the first woman to hold this position. She will turn 60 on March 27 and has extensive missionary experience.
SIMONA BAMBRILLA
Prefect of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life
The missionary vocation to the people, and I speak specifically of the mission to the people, is a beautiful gift. Why is it beautiful and important? Well, first of all, it is true that we, the missionaries, are sent, sent to those who do not know Christ, who have not found him.
In addition, the Pope has chosen Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, superior of the Salesians, as pro-prefect of the dicastery, further reinforcing the importance of shared leadership between women and men in the Church.
Since the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has worked to open doors to women within the Vatican structure. Thanks to this, the female presence in the Holy See and Vatican City State has significantly increased.
