There are currently 139 cardinal electors. The current apostolic constitution establishes that the maximum number of cardinal electors is 120, but this is more of a guideline.
Italy has the most cardinals of all: 17, although their presence in the College of Cardinals has decreased considerably during this pontificate. At the 2013 conclave, there were 28 cardinals.
The second country with the most cardinal electors is the United States with 10. Next is Brazil with 7 and Spain with 6, although in 2025, it will lose three because they will turn 80 and at that age they lose the right to participate in a possible conclave.
On a continental level, Europe continues to hold the most weight with 55 electors. Next is Asia, but with less than half, at 24. Oceania with 4 is the country with the fewest cardinal electors.
