The World Day of Peace has been celebrated in the Church since 1968. This year it coincides with the Jubilee, a year dedicated to the remission of sins. This is why Pope Francis began by asking forgiveness be practised in the world and by those with the greatest responsibilities.

And the Jubliee asks us to translate this forgiveness on a social level, so that no person, no family, no population is crushed by debts. I therefore encourage the rulers of countries with a Christian tradition to set a good example by cancelling or reducing as much as possible the debts of the poorest countries.
The Pope reiterated his plea for peace in the world and recalled that with wars there are no winners: everyone loses.
