This year, the fifth annual concert for the poor was held, this time conducted by the composer Hans Zimmer.
3,000 needy people came to the Paul VI Hall on Saturday to listen to some of Zimmer’s best works live, from Interstellar, Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean:
With 12 nominations and 2 Oscar wins, Zimmer revealed at the Vatican press conference what drives him to compose. At the age of 18, in England, he saw a poor woman with two small children. It was at that moment he took that image as motivation.
Zimmer says that he enthusiastically accepted the invitation that the Vatican offered him to conduct the traditional Christmas concert for the poor.
HANS ZIMMER
Composer
What makes me accept the invitation is obvious: it is very important that we bring light and focus to the poor. You know… this is a concert that is with the poor, about the poor, for the poor… this [concert] is with them, so that was very important, and I think that Pope Francis is a progressive pope… You know, he understands these things, and he understands how we can bring all this together.
Daniel Oren, Scappucci, and Ennio Morricone were some participants in the list of previous concerts in which Zimmer's name is now also included.
At 67 years of age, Hans Zimmer professes that the aim of this concert is to improve the lives of people who have no resources. During the press conference in the Paul VI Hall, he promised to give his best during the concert, and so he did.
