This group of experts, entrepreneurs and academics has gathered at the Vatican to discuss the challenges of Artificial Intelligence for the Catholic Church. Though there are those with negative views of AI, some see a clear alternative in this environment.

P. MICHAEL BAGGOT
Pontifical A. Regina Apostolorum Professor

“We have a great opportunity as a Church in this era of Artificial Intelligence. There are many applications that propose 'artificial intimacy', ideas for meeting friends and even having romantic relationships. In the face of this, the Church can present the beauty of the community that welcomes, sustains and accompanies people. And it is that we all have a deep desire to be known and loved.”

Christian communities that appreciate the dignity of each person are in clear contrast to the individualism of social media.

P. MICHAEL BAGGOT
Pontifical A. Regina Apostolorum Professor

“We are facing a society in which people are looking for artificial intimacy in electronic systems. If they are looking for friendship or love through these devices it means that, deep down, they have a great lack of love. Perhaps they have had negative personal experiences with other people, they have hurts or difficulties, even traumas. So it is our responsibility as a Church to meet people in that moment of weakness and ensure that there is healing and there is hope. 'We are here to hold you.'”

Along with that healing activity, the Church has a great asset to offer Artificial Intelligence.

P. STEPHEN WANG
Rector of the English College in Rome

“The question is 'How can the Church help those who work with Artificial Intelligence to do so more deeply?' And the Church brings great wisdom. It has answers to 'What does it mean to be human, what does it mean to be conscious,' and all the questions about immortality or transhumanism…”

Chaired by Cardinal Peter Turkson, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the meeting is called 'forum of builders of artificial intelligence.'
