This year's ecumenical vigil was simpler than in 2023, although more recollected and symbolic.
To pray for the unity of the Church together with representatives of other Christian denominations, the Protomartyrs' Square was chosen as the location, the prelude to the excavations leading to the tomb of Peter.
Pope Francis did not deliver the homily, but declared it official. In his message he said the following:
Today we also express shame for the scandal of the division of Christians.
He said that it is a scandal for a divided Church to preach Christ and that the Synod is another opportunity to strengthen ties.
In fact, the participants of the Synod were present at this event animated by the Taizé Community. The vigil was organized on the occasion of a new anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, which put an important spotlight on ecumenism.
