The document Dignitas Infinita, published by the Vatican in April, confirmed Pope Francis' rejection of gender ideology.
POPE FRANCIS
Today, the most important danger is gender ideology, which annuls differences.
To suppress differences is to suppress humanity.
In addition, the document presented by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith also pronounced itself on the transgender issue, saying the following:
CARD. VÍCTOR M. FERNÁNDEZ
Prefect, Dicastery Doctrine of the Faith
When it comes to sex change, there is a reflection in the document on the importance of accepting the reality as it is. The topic is important today because there is a tendency to want to create reality.
These positions were not well received by Catholic LGTBQ+ groups, specifically by New Ways Ministry. For this reason, one of its founders, the nun Jeannine Gramick, went to visit Pope Francis. On their website, they describe it as follows:
“Pope Francis met today with a diverse group of transgender, intersex, and ally Catholics, including a medical doctor who provides gender transition care.”
And they asked Pope Francis that he work on doing the following:
“To move past the Church’s negative approach to gender-diverse people.”
The meeting took place on October 12 at Casa Santa Marta, and it is not the first that the Pope has had with Gramick. They also met during the 2023 Synodal Assembly. There was no public reaction to the visit from Pope Francis or the Vatican.
What is clear is that the situation of Sister Jeannine is much discussed in Rome. In 1999, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith led by then Cardinal Ratzinger forced her to abandon her pastoral activity related to homosexual persons for promoting doctrinal “ambiguities and errors”. However, the current pope, although he has not pronounced himself on the ideology of the religious, does maintain contact with her and has said that he considers her a courageous person.
