After ending his time in the majority Muslim county of Indonesia, Pope Francis has arrived in Papua New Guinea, where 96% of the population is Christian. The country is characterized by jungles and mountains and home to some of the world's last uncontacted tribes.

The Pope arrived around 7pm local time and received a unique welcome: a 21 cannon salute and gifts given by two children in traditional indigenous dress.

Once on the platform alongside the Deputy Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, the Guard of Honor initiated the welcome ceremony.

Immediately after, Pope Francis left the airport to rest up for his packed schedule in the coming days, which includes meetings with authorities and church leaders, as well as visiting remote Catholic communities.
