The secretary of the disciplinary section of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, John Jospeh Kennedy, will now serve as an archbishop. And the undersecretary, Philippe Curbelié, will become a bishop.
The Vatican doctrinal office has a section that specializes in disciplinary matters and therefore deals with the issue of sexual abuse.

Now, Pope Francis has appointed some of the leaders of this section as bishops. The secretary, John Jospeh Kennedy, will now serve as an archbishop. And undersecretary, Philippe Curbelié, will become a bishop.

The idea behind these appointments is that the leaders may have greater recognition in the Roman Curia and establish more effective communication with bodies like the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. This was instituted in 2014 by Pope Francis and promotes the diocesan responsibility of protecting minors and vulnerable adults from abuse. The Commission is part of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith but has its own norms and officials.
