The Church had never had a Latin American pope…or a Jesuit. In 2013, Francis became the first pope of this order founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Although the Pope does not quote him often, it is evident that the Spanish saint, known for his guidance in discernment, has influenced Francis' life. The Pope even dedicated a cycle of his Wednesday catecheses to talk about discernment and its importance in the life of every Christian.
POPE FRANCIS
When Ignatius was at home recovring after injuring a leg in battle, he began to read. He loved tales of chivalry, but only the lives of the saints were available. However, reading their stories, he got to know figures like St. Francis and St. Dominic and felt that God was attracting him and inviting him to change his life.
Although Francis does not often cite St. Ignatius, he often recognizes his feast.
POPE FRANCIS
On the feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, I extend a heartfelt greeting to my fellow Jesuits. Continue to walk zealously and joyfully in service of the Lord.
Pope Francis could also be seen in the Church of the Gesù, in 2014, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the restoration of the Society of Jesus. There, he presided at vespers. And he delivered these words of encouragement to the Jesuits.
POPE FRANCIS
Row then! Row, be strong, even with the wind against you! Let us row in the service of the Church! Let us row together!
St. Ignatius was canonized in the 17th century and his body remains in the Church of the Gesù in Rome.
