The Vatican issued a statement expressing its concern over the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. It insists the attack was an episode that “wounds democracy” and causes suffering and death. The statement said the Holy See…

…joins the U.S. Bishops' prayer for America, for the victims and for peace in the country, so violence will never prevail.

The U.S. bishops also condemned any kind of political violence and noted it will never be the way to resolve party disagreements.

Pope Francis and Trump have not always seen eye to eye on issues. For example, migration.
Returning from a trip to Mexico in 2016, the Pope had prayed for migrants at the border. And one journalist asked him if American Catholics should vote for Trump, particularly after he promised massive deportations and that he would build a wall to prevent irregular immigration.

POPE FRANCIS

A person who thinks only of making walls, wherever that may be and not of making bridges, is not a Christian. That is not in the Gospel. Regarding what you asked, whether to vote or not vote, I will not get involved. I'll only say this: this man is not Christian if he speaks this way. We have to see how he said this.

Years later, they met face to face at the Vatican. And the then President Trump left stating the meeting had empowered him to work for peace in the world.
