The slower summer months at the Vatican: what will this July look like?

The summer is traditionally a slower time of the year for popes. They would often escape the heat of Rome to live in their summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, about 15 miles outside of the city.

But Pope Francis has been known to skip his time at the residence and keep up with a generally busy summer schedule. And this July will be no different.

Although the Pope's current schedule indicates that he will take an official break from all public liturgies from July 7 to Sept. 1, including his Wednesday General Audiences, he will still publicly pray the Sunday Angelus and has a few other events planned.

On July 1, Pope Francis will hold an Ordinary Public Consistory at the Vatican to vote on some causes for canonization. On this day, the Pope is also expected to announce the date of the canonization of future saints, including Italian Carlo Acutis, who died in 2006 at just 15 years old.

POPE FRANCIS

His testimony indicates to the young people of today that true happiness is found when God is put in the first place, serving Him in the brothers, especially the last ones. Let's applaud the young blessed millennial!

On July 7, Pope Francis will make a one-day pastoral visit to the northern Italian city of Trieste.

At the end of the month, on Sunday, July 28, the Vatican will celebrate the 4th annual World Grandparents Day. While Pope Francis inaugurated this day in 2021, it is not yet clear if he will attend the celebration this year.

Along with holding non-official meetings, popes have often used the summer months to write pastoral documents. Pope Francis may use some of his time in July to write the recently announced document on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is expected to be released at the end of September.
